Tottenham Hotspur may sit atop Group D with two matches to go until the knockout stages of the Champions League, but there is still plenty of work for Spurs to do before they can start preparing for the Round of 16.

Tottenham would punch its ticket to the next stage with a win over Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday, but that’s easier said than done.

All season long, whether in the Premier League or Champions League, the knock on the Spurs is that they struggle to break down sides that sit deep in a low block. The Spurs are at their best when they can defend and spring into action on lightning-quick counterattacks, but when the onus is on them to knock the ball around and create scoring chances on their own, they tend to play down to their opponents.

We saw this trend show up in the reverse fixture of this matchup, which ended up in a 2-0 win for Sporting in Portugal six weeks ago.
