Tim Scott opens up about his girlfriend
Republican presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott got personal on the campaign trial amid increasing speculation about the lifelong bachelor’s love life.
“I’m dating a lovely Christian girl,” the South Carolina senator told Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird when asked at the Faith and Freedom Coalition in Des Moines Saturday.
“One of the things I love about the gospel of Jesus Christ is it points us always in the right direction. Proverbs 18:22 says, ‘He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord,’” Scott continued.
“So can we just pray together for me,” he added to laughter from the crowd.
Bird had asked Scott, 57, if “other than your mama, is there any special lady in your life?” His inquiry came on the heels of a lengthy Washington Post feature story last week that took a deep dive into the senator’s love life.
The outlet caveated that it couldn’t independently confirm her exisitance other than “to note that for a presidential campaign to essentially reverse-catfish America would be insane.”
Scott begrudgingly opened up about his girlfriend to the newspaper, recounting how a friend from church fixed the two up.
Scott’s campaign declined to divulge her name or organize an off-the-record chat with her.
One of Scott’s close friends, Brian Moniz, the son of the 57-year-old’s late mentor John Moniz, told the paper he was unaware about the girlfriend.
He was also unaware that Scott was once engaged, a nugget Scott let slip on CNN several years back.
Still, at least one person has crossed paths with Scott’s girlfriend — his 2024 campaign manager Jennifer DeCasper, who claims to have hung with the mystery woman at the zoo.
Scott publicly revealed that he had a girlfriend in May.
Chatter about Scott’s dating life led to some trepidations among donors, according to an Axios report from late August.
Donors reportedly wanted more specifics about Scott’s bachelor status.
At the moment, he is the only major contender on either side that has never been married. It’s been over 139 years since an unmarried man ascended to the Oval Office.
James Buchanan, speculated to have been the first gay president remained single after he clinched the presidency in 1856.
“An Old Bachelor is at most but a half man,” The New York Evening Post, as The New York Post was then known said at the time of Buchanan. “How can such a person make more than a half-President?”
Scott’s South Carolina counterpart, Sen. Lindsey Graham, previously vied for president in 2016 and was unmarried, though he publicly mused that his sister would likely serve as a rotational first lady.
Despite Scott’s bachelor’s status, the senator “always had a way with the ladies,” according to Moniz.
A key reason why he hasn’t been able to tie the knot with anyone is because of his very demanding work schedule, Moniz surmised.
“It’s been a challenge, mainly for the females in his life over the years,” Moniz told the Washington Post. “They get put on the back burner. Women have hung around for a while, and they realize they’re not going to be the top priority right now.”
Scott is currently sitting in seventh place with 2.5% support in the latest RealClearPolitics aggregate of polls.
