This is the color everyone will be wearing this summer
It’s the crème de la crème of 2024 couture.
Tastemakers from Tinseltown to TikTok are churning out the yummiest look of the year, virally making much to-do over a deliciously hot hue and anointing it the shade of the sunny season.
“The color of the summer is [butter] yellow,” announced NYC style influencer Isabelle Michelle, in a cyber sound-off as she twirled around in a mini dress from Shein.
Her sentiments were echoed by self-crowned “fashion girly” Maddison Lynn, who chimed, “The color butter yellow is single-handedly making me fall in love with summer fashion,” in a separate, yet equally snazzy snippet.
“I love the color,” added Lynn, from Los Angeles. “It makes me happy, I feel I look good in it, it goes with everything. I just want to hold on to this color forever.”
Viral ballyhoo over butter yellow — the off-white, lemony glaze made iconic by Kate Hudson’s Carolina Herrera number in “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days” — comes as an effort of “dopamine dressing.” The social media craze encourages clotheshorses to don vibrant ensembles in the name of sound mental health.
“This isn’t medicine by any means,” fashion psychologist Dawnn Karen previously said of the modish movement. “But I’ve seen people who are normally very shy put on a colorful outfit and become fierce, fabulous and free.”
Cream of the crop hotshots seem to agree.
Haute fashion houses such as Schiaparelli, Bottega Veneta and Jacquemus sparked fashionista appetites for the trendy tint of the top of the year, highlight butter yellow on their respective runways.
At Gucci’s Cruise 2025 show in London, Lila Moss, the 21-year-old daughter of supermodel Kate Moss, wore a buttoned-up, butter yellow blazer and matching hot shorts.
Its brilliance has, too, outfitted the A-list frames of Aubrey Plaza, Rihanna and Emily Ratajkowski at swank pre-summer soirées.
Plaza, 39, looked every bit the smooth esthete in a butter yellow satin shift from Loewe at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards in January.
“Diamonds” diva, Rihanna, 36, shined just as bright while sporting the shade in a strapless midi dress by Alexander McQueen during her Fenty Beauty launch in April.
And EmRata, 32, turned heads at the King’s Trust Global Gala in May, rocking the richness in a silk Dolce & Gabbana halter gown.
Butter yellow’s fashionable moment is happening on the heels of the “red tights” trend. The devilishly divine swing saw celebs such as Anya Taylor-Joy, 28, sporting crimson stockings during the winter months.
But clothes-pros from fashion marketplace, Depop, says the new hue of the day is likely here to stay.
“After red’s domination as the color of the moment, we see softer colors returning as we settle into the summer, with yellow being the perfect shade for holidays, summer events and festivals,” experts told Hypebabe.
“Still bright enough to draw attention, yet soft enough to be wearable, butter yellow evokes a cheerfulness and a carefree attitude that goes hand in hand with the summer season.”
