Shocking video captures jet crashing on highway, killing 10
Harrowing dashcam videos captured the moment a private jet slammed into a highway in Malaysia, killing all eight people on board along with two motorists as it exploded in a fireball.
The Beechcraft Model 390 carrying six passengers and two pilots from the resort island of Langkawilost lost contact with air traffic control Thursday afternoon — then came crashing down on a road near the capital of Kuala Lumpur.
Passing motorists caught the crash on dashcams — with the highway suddenly erupting in a giant, fast-moving ball of flames.
A doorcam from far away also caught a loud boom — enough to violently shake the camera — as the jet was seen crashing head-first, sparking the immediate inferno.
The two-engine plane struck a car and a motorcycle, killing the two people on the ground, as well as everyone onboard, officials said.
“There was no emergency call, the aircraft had been given clearance to land,” Selangor Police Chief Hussein Omar Khan said.
“Forensic personnel are in the process of collecting the remains and will bring them to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang for a post-mortem examination and identification process,” he said, according to a CNN report citing state newspaper Berita Harlan.
The family of one of the passengers, Shaharul Amir Omar, 49, shared the final selfie from the retired Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) commander.
“My late brother was very excited to board a luxury aircraft. He even shared many photos in our family’s WhatsApp group,” said Omar’s sister, 29-year-old Nur Syahirah Omar, the New Straits Times reported.
She said her brother informed the family online that he was traveling with Johari Harun, head of housing and environment for Pahang state.
“He was so excited and shared several selfies on the plane because it was his first experience (boarding a luxury plane),” Nur Syahirah said.
“During his service in RMN, we did know that he was a helicopter pilot. My brother told me that this was his first chance to experience boarding a luxury aircraft,” she said, according to the New Straits Times.
“My mother had a hunch that my brother was involved in the accident because he could not be reached by phone again after that,” the grieving sister continued.
“We only found out later through viral videos on social media, but it was still 50-50 because we were not so sure whether it was the plane my brother boarded or not,” she added.
Meanwhile, the late captain’s mother was grief-stricken when she was met by reporters after the tragedy and shared his last words with her.
Mahanom Ismail, 67, said Shahrul Kamal Roslan, 41, called her before he underwent surgery at the Tuanku Mizan Military Hospital in Kuala Lumpur on June 24, the New Straits Times reported.
“A day before his intestine and gallbladder surgery, he contacted me to ask how I was. Before ending the call, he said ‘I (Adik) love you so much, mama’,” she said.
The pilot is survived by his wife and four sons.
The flight was operated by private company Jet Valet, which was cited by local media as saying it will cooperate with the investigation.
