Rep. Comer wants more info from Hunter Biden prosecutor on cushy plea deal

A top House Republican is demanding more information from the Trump-appointed prosecutor behind Hunter Biden’s cushy plea deal — urging him to attend a briefing or submit a written explanation.

Rep. James Comer (R-Kentucky) told Axios on Tuesday that he was hoping Delaware US Attorney David Weiss would explain “what he means when he says” the investigation into the first son is “ongoing.”

“If [Weiss] can tell us that via mail or briefing, that would be better,” Comer, the chair of the House Oversight Committee, told the outlet.

“Preferably for time’s sake he could give us a briefing … I don’t think that’s asking too much.”

After a five-year investigation, Weiss’ office announced on Tuesday that Hunter, 53, will plead guilty to federal tax and firearms charges in exchange for no jail time and a felony-free criminal record.

Comer quickly joined a chorus of Republican critics blasting the agreement as a “sweetheart plea deal.”

“Let’s be clear: The Department of Justice’s charges against President Biden’s son Hunter reveals a two-tiered system of justice,” Comer wrote in a statement.

“Hunter Biden is getting away with a slap on the wrist when growing evidence uncovered by the House Oversight Committee reveals the Bidens engaged in a pattern of corruption, influence peddling and possibly bribery.”

Later, Weiss clarified that the investigation into Hunter’s alleged illicit activities was still “ongoing” – which could allow federal authorities to refuse to supply documents to House Republicans.

President Biden’s younger son is set to plead guilty to two misdemeanor charges of failing to pay federal income taxes, Weiss’ letter stated.

Charging documents alleged that Hunter failed to report substantial income from countries like Ukraine and China, and did not pay at least $100,000 in income taxes in 2017 and 2018.

He is also expected to enroll in a pretrial diversion agreement on a felony charge of illegally possessing a firearm as a drug user after he reportedly lied about his substance abuse in Oct. 2018.

While the two tax charges carry maximum sentences of 12 months each in addition to the 10 years’ incarceration for the gun charge, insiders say Hunter will likely get away with probation on all three.

He is also avoiding potential charges of working as an unregistered lobbyist in violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act and money laundering.

Hunter’s controversial plea deal also comes as the House Oversight Committee continues to probe claims that both Hunter and Joe Biden accepted $10 million in bribes from the owner of the Ukrainian natural gas company Burisma Holdings.

On Tuesday, Comer accused the FBI of heavily redacting two 2017 informant files in the investigation.

“[It was] a total waste of my time,” Comer griped about the FD-1023 files provided by the FBI at a secure reading room at the Capitol.

“I need to know what the US attorney meant by this is an ‘ongoing’ investigation because the reason the FBI and the Treasury Department won’t give me all of the evidence of wrongdoing by the Bidens is because they say it is part of an ongoing investigation,” he added to reporters, referring to Weiss’ comment about the status of Hunter’s plea deal.

“So is it a real ongoing investigation or is this just an attempt to obstruct and block our committee from providing oversight? That’s a very important line in what [Weiss] presented to the American people today and nobody knows what that means.”

Comer claims to have identified nine Biden family members who allegedly received income from heavyweights in China and Romania.

When the specifics of the plea deal were released on Tuesday, a White House spokesperson said that the President and First Lady “love and support” Hunter, but declined to comment further.
