NYU Langone Health ranked #1 in US for quality and safety

NYU Langone Health — long recognized as one of the nation’s preeminent hospital systems — has been singled out for its leadership in patient safety and quality of care.

NYU Langone Health was awarded the Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award for superior patient care and the Ambulatory Quality and Accountability Award for excellence in outpatient care, making it No. 1 in the US.

The award marks the second year in a row that the Manhattan hospitals have achieved a No. 1 ranking.

Additionally, NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island was ranked No. 1 nationally in the Birnbaum Quality Leadership listing of specialized complex care medical centers.

And NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn was ranked No. 7 in the nation out of 154 large specialized complex medical centers.

The rankings were developed by Vizient, a health care performance organization that bases rankings on mortality and infection rates, patient experience scores and other quality measures. In its rankings, Vizient includes 97% of US academic medical centers among its members.

The Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award was named in memory of NYU Langone’s former chief of hospital operations.

“Bernie Birnbaum dedicated his career at NYU Langone to improving quality, safety and patient experience and I can think of no better way to honor his memory,” said Dr. Fritz François, executive vice president and vice dean, chief of hospital operations.

“For a campus with such high volume and complex cases, this award provides a wonderful moment to take pride in our work,” François added.

In Brooklyn, NYU Langone Hospital ranked No. 7 in the nation among large specialized complex medical centers. It’s Brooklyn’s only hospital with an “A” rating on the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade and with Magnet-recognition for excellence in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

NYU Langone has been ranked as the top performer in outpatient care for eight of the nine years since the Ambulatory Quality and Accountability Award was created in 2015, in recognition of its superior access to care, quality, efficiency, continuum of care and equity.
