New Yorkers rushing to buy Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl flare jeans — or just try them on
Faddish fashionistas all have one goal: score a pair of $1,200 flared Celine jeans.
Bougie style buffs of the Big Apple are hightailing it to Celine in SoHo, a security-guarded shop, hoping to get their hands on the virally popular pants. Some serious spenders are digging into their wallets to buy — while wannabes just want to get in the dressing rooms to give the jeans a try.
However, sources close to the store tell The Post that they’re “completely sold out” of the flared finery, which rapper Kendrick Lamar, 37, made must-have by wearing a pair for his Super Bowl LIX halftime show Sunday.
Lamar’s dapper designer denim has become as coveted as the Vince Lombardi Trophy secured by the Philadelphia Eagles to clotheshorses of NYC and beyond. Within 48 hours of the Super Bowl, Google searches for “flared jeans” spiked 5,000%.
And now, Kendrick is being credited for inspiring the third coming of the groovy cut.
“Y2K style is back,” David Thielebeule, men’s fashion director for Bloomingdale’s, told The Post. “Kendrick’s flared denim and varsity jacket nailed the vibe.”
“These vintage-inspired silhouettes bring nostalgia back in a cool, modern way, and we’ve seen a definite surge in interest since the halftime performance,” he added.
Flared jeans are also performing high among the high-rollers, too. VIPs, such as Meghan Markle, Bella Hadid, Sydney Sweeney and Pharrell Williams, have recently been spotted sporting the haute hip-huggers. Those who dare-to-flare are leaning into a retro style, which first rose to popularity in the 1960s and ‘70s and enjoyed a resurrection during the early aughts.
The Celine SoHo insider, echoed those sentiments, saying, “It’s been very exciting,” referring to the swarm of fashion fans who’ve popped in to test-wear the flares over the past week.
They’re pioneers of the “trying-on” trend — and it’s picking up speed with both women and men.
Summer Stewart of Tribeca purchased the pricey pants months before Kendrick’s iconic performance.
But, that didn’t stop Stewart from popping over to her nearest Celine to try on yet another pair of the buzzy bottoms shortly after his Super Bowl slay.
“I absolutely gasped when I saw his jeans,” Stewart, 37, a fashion designer and mom of one, told The Post. “They are the absolute best-quality, best-fitting jeans on the market.”
Newman Parker, 24, agrees. He hit Celine of Beverly Hills to try the hot commodity in a women’s size 29 — the same size Kendrick rocked while wowing his halftime show audience of over 133 million — and stacked over 766,000 TikTok views on footage of his fitting.
“They’re so flattering,” Parker, a luxury lifestyle influencer, told The Post. “By trying them on, you can definitely tell the difference between $1,200 jeans and [a less expensive pair].”
“I had it going on in those jeans,” he said. “I may have to go back to Celine and buy them.”
But for Rodrigo Calderón, 25, a musical theatre actor based in Midtown, lavish gear from the French fashion house is nowhere near his budget.
So, he’s snagged several pairs of head-turning jeans for under $100 from local thrift stores.
“If I was rich I would [buy them from Celine], but I’m not,” said Rodrigo, who’s worn his cost-friendly flares for nights on the town and recent New York Fashion Week events.
“Flared jeans are a timeless and iconic choice,” he added. “I’m glad Kendrick Lamar put them on the spot again.”
