New video reveals Jenni Hermoso laughed about team president’s kiss
The scandal surrounding an illicit kiss at the women’s World Cup appears to have taken another turn.
In a new video taken on the team bus following Spain’s World Cup win, Jenni Hermoso — who accused Spanish federation president Luis Rubiales of a nonconsensual “sexist act” when he kissed her after the team’s victory — is seen laughing and joking about the kiss.
During the video, Hermoso appears to show her teammates a picture that compares Rubiales’ kiss with a picture of Iker Casillas with his then-girlfriend reporter Sara Carbonero, who kissed during an interview following Spain’s 2010 World Cup win in South Africa.
“Oh my goodness,” Hermoso says as she goes to take a swig of champagne.
“All enthusiastic, he comes over and hugs me like this,” Hermoso said, translated from Spanish, imitating the way Rubiales grabbed her head.
The team then begins to chant “Beso, beso, beso,” the Spanish word for kiss, before serenading Rubiales’ with chants of “President” as the team boss entered the boss and said, “Stop, you’re making me blush.”
Hermoso has released a statement denying the kiss was consensual, and her team has followed suit.
“I want to clarify that, as seen in the images, at no time did I consent to the kiss he gave me and, of course, in no case did I try to lift the president,” Hermoso said last week.
“I do not tolerate my word being doubted, much less making up words I have not said.”
Fifty-five members of the Spanish team also signed a petition threatening to refuse to continue playing until Rubiales was removed from his position.
Rubiales, meanwhile, has refused to resign amid a 90-day suspension from FIFA, though leading officials within the Spanish Football Federation asked the him to do so on Monday.
Juan Rubiales, Luis’ uncle and the former Chief of Staff of Spanish soccer, has condemned his nephew’s actions and accused Luis of “being obsessed with power, money, women.”
Rubiales’ mother, on the other hand, was hospitalized after going on a hunger strike to defend her son’s honor.
