Moving to these ‘Blue Zone’ states could add years to your life

They’re feelin’ blue — and lovin’ every minute of it.

New research predicts the states that are most likely to contain “Blue Zones” — a title given to regions known for their healthy lifestyles and long life expectancy.

The term was coined by explorer Dan Buettner, who traversed the globe to learn more about the secrets of long and jovial living. During his travels, he circles communities with the most healthy practices in blue.

Recent data from healthcare company NowPatient supports Buettner’s years of global discovery — these metrics help pinpoint areas within the US most likely to develop Blue Zones.

Researchers analyzed reports of depression and anxiety, the prevalence of religion, quality of sleep, physical activity, population density, and life expectancy, along with vegan and vegetarian food options.

As of 2020, the US was ranked 61st out of 237 nations in terms of life expectancy.

California — home of Loma Linda, the US’ only official Blue Zone — was naturally found to be the state most likely to produce more healthy and happy nabes.

The Golden State scored particularly high with the number of adults getting at least seven hours of sleep and low with the number of physically inactive people. Its overall rating was 7.03 out of 10.

New York, meanwhile, tanked in the ratings at No. 30 out of 49, with a 4.82 score.

(New Jersey and Washington, D.C. did not have enough usable data for this calculation.)

More than a quarter of New Yorkers were found to be physically inactive and a third reported experiencing anxiety or depression.

States farther north fared better. Massachusetts came in fifth (6.31), while Connecticut (6.22) was eighth, and Rhode Island (6.19) was ninth for prospective Blue Zones.

The New England states shared high sleep scores and life expectancies.

As far as other Atlantic states go, Maryland tied Massachusetts for fifth, while Virginia (6.28) was seventh.

Elsewhere, Florida (6.04) tied with Washington for 11th, Texas took 14th (5.89), and Pennsylvania tied with Vermont for 20th (5.57).

Kentucky had the worst of the 49 entries with a 2.32 rating — blame low life expectancy, high depression rates, and low sleep quality numbers.
