Mom arrested after 2 kids killed running onto freeway to chase luggage
A mother has been arrested after her two children were killed running onto a busy California highway to chase luggage that had fallen off their car.
Sandra Ortiz’s kids, a 10-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl, were struck by a car going at full speed on the Route 78 Freeway in Vista, near San Diego, on Sunday at about 6 p.m., KGTV reported.
The children, who haven’t been identified publicly, had jumped out of their 33-year-old mom’s green GMC Yukon SUV when she pulled onto the righthand shoulder.

They were trying to retrieve the suitcase that had flown off their car when they were both hit by a white Nissan Sentra.
The 41-year-old driver of Nissan car, who remained at the scene until authorities arrived, hasn’t been charged.
Meanwhile, the mom — who stayed in the car as her children ran to the highway traffic — was arrested for a DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and child endangerment.
