Missouri man says American Airlines lost his prosthetic leg, won’t pay him back
He says their mistake cost him an arm and a leg — literally.
American Airlines allegedly lost a disabled Missouri man’s prosthetic limb — then refused to pay him back for the much-needed $26,000 device.
“You can’t do this to somebody that’s disabled: Just say, ‘Hey, we lost something of yours, but we’re not going to pay for it,’” Michael Williams, owner of the aluminum leg, told Fox2now.com
Williams, of St. Louis, handed a suitcase marked “fragile” with the limb inside to an airline worker at check-in before boarding a flight from Indianapolis to Charlotte on his way home in 2020, he said.
But when he landed in St. Louis, the priceless prosthetic — which was specially tailored to fit his body — never arrived, he said.
“They roll me downstairs to the baggage claim. I’m sitting there waiting for my luggage to come off, and never comes off,” he fumed to the outlet.
Williams followed the airline’s protocol in a bid to be reimbursed for the limb and other items, and eventually received a check for just $600 to cover his lost clothing, he said.
“When I spoke with the young lady that was handling the claim, she told me this was to cover the clothes that you lost. I was like, ‘Ok, fine, great,” he said.
A few weeks later, an American Airlines rep informed him the firm didn’t have “enough proof or evidence to pay for the leg,” Williams said.
Williams has since hired a lawyer to fight the alleged airhead move and said he’s hesitant to ever fly again.
American Airlines didn’t immediately return The Post’s request for comment Wednesday. It also didn’t return several inquiries from Fox 2.
