Kentucky teen dies after collapsing during soccer practice
A Kentucky high school student has died after he collapsed during soccer practice, according to a report.
Matthew Mangine Jr., 17, was performing training drills Tuesday night as part of the soccer team at St. Henry High School in Erlanger when he collapsed on the field, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.
His family released a statement confirming the rising junior’s death, but no cause has been provided, the outlet reported.
“We are heartbroken from the tragic loss of our beloved son, brother and grandchild Matthew Mangine Jr.,” the family said. “Our family’s grief is immeasurable and a bright light in the world has been extinguished all too soon. Please respect the privacy of our family and allow us the time to mourn privately.”
Principal David Otte said the school community was “beyond devastated” by the news of his death, the report said.
“Our hearts are breaking, and we are beyond devastated this morning with the news that a member of the St. Henry Boys’ Soccer Team collapsed on the field during training last night and passed away,” Otte said.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends and we are praying for them during this very difficult time.”
