Ken Griffey Jr. works as photographer for Lionel Messi match
Lionel Messi has brought out all kinds of sports legends and celebrities to his U.S. matches, and Wednesday’s was no different.
But this one came with a little more of a twist.
As Messi and Inter Miami took on Nashville SC at DRV PNK Stadium, Hall of Fame baseball player Ken Griffey Jr. was taking pictures of the match from the sidelines as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
Before the match even started, the slugger was seen taking pictures with 15-time major world champion boxer Floyd Mayweather.
But during the action, Griffey — with his signature backward baseball hat — was hard at work, spotted on the sidelines by the Apple TV+ broadcast with his camera.
Per Miami sports broadcaster Josh Moser, Griffey was indeed a working member of the media and was listed as a “still photographer,” for the event.
Griffey isn’t new to photography, as he was seen as far back as 2015 taking pictures at that year’s Fiesta Bowl.
A legend with the Mariners for 13 seasons, Griffey, 53, also snapped some shots while at this year’s Home Run Derby in Seattle, which featured current Mariners All-Star Julio Rodriguez.
Randy Johnson, one of Griffey’s Hall of Fame teammates in Seattle, also has spent his retirement dabbling in sports photography.
In 2016, Griffey told ESPN that he would one day like to take pictures of track and field events at the Olympics.
Wednesday’s game proved to be without any scoring, though Griffey did get to witness some history as Miami failed to win for the first time in 10 matches since Messi joined the club.
It was also the first time Miami was held scoreless in the Messi era.
