I got my tubes tied, it screwed up my whole body

Since undergoing tubal ligation, Amanda is a big advocate for women boycotting the procedure.

“Don’t get the procedure it will screw up your whole body,” she tells Kidspot. “It’s the worst decision I ever made.”

After initially having a little pushback from doctors, the 40-year-old underwent the procedure 20 years ago following the birth of her second child.

Since then she has suffered numerous medical complications as a result.

“I have excruciating pain every month”

“I have never been well after getting it done—my tubes were cut tied and burnt,” the US mum explains.

“I got endometriosis and am at a higher chance for cancer.”

On top of this, Amanda gained weight and was told she has to be on birth control for the rest of her life.

“I have endometriosis very bad and PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). I’ve missed a lot of work and pay, I have excruciating pain every month.”

Amanda thought getting the procedure would mean no more need for birth control, but the issues that have arisen since are worse than she could ever have imagined.

“Endo is horrible. I wish it on no one, my periods are so bad I want a full hysterectomy.”

“I wish I could go back before my tubes were tied”

Prior to the procedure, Amanda was “fine”, and she didn’t feel the need to research the procedure and its potential side effects too much as she “felt I could trust my doctor”.

“Now I wish I could go back,” she admits.

Although it’s been two decades since the procedure, Amanda still regrets it.

“I probably wouldn’t have had it done… if I knew the complications it would come with,” she says.

“I’m still strongly against it and always advocate against it.”

The other reason for her regret is the desire she has for another child that rises to the surface every now and then.

But with her two kids aged 20 and 24, Amanda admits she’s glad she can’t have any more children.

“I’m too old to want to raise kids.”
