I dyed an old wedding dress pink for prom: ‘Like a Disney princess’
One bride’s trash became this teen’s treasure.
Megan Johnson, a 17-year-old high school student, dyed an old wedding dress pink for her senior prom.
Johnson, also known as @therealmeganjohnson on TikTok, posted a video on Mar. 12 sharing how she put together her dream look.
“This is me dying a wedding dress I thrifted to wear to prom!” she captioned the clip, now with over 10 million views.
The fashionista starts the process by tailoring the wedding gown, embellished with pearls and other features, to ensure it fits perfectly.
Once it’s time for transformation, she fills a tub with hot water, dumps in a bottle of pink liquid and gives the solution a stir with a mop, per the dye manufacturer’s instructions.
Johnson then takes a deep breath before dunking the pure white gown into the infused water.
“This is me taking one more look before I sealed my fate,” as she places the dress inside the container — and leaves it there to soak.
“I stirred it for 30 minutes, I didn’t want it too dark but I think it turned out pretty cute,” Johnson later reported as she laid the now bubblegum pink dress on the garage floor.
“Should I try it on tomorrow?” she teased her followers.
Within four days of posting, 2,000 viewers had pleaded to see her in the new gown.
“It turned out so damn good! You did fantastic! Do we get to see it on???” commented a curious watcher. “PLEASE DO A TRY ON,” another begged.
Others were surprised to see that the bridal gown she’d thrifted was the exact same style they’d worn to their own nuptials.
“This is my exact wedding dress from David’s Bridal in 2001. Wonderful to see what you did with it,” one wrote. Said another, “That’s my wedding dress! Lol.”
The TikToker ultimately gave in to her viewers’, posting a 32-second video on Mar. 13 in which she can be seen frolicking in a field and singing along to the song “Ceilings” by Lizzy McAlpine.
Several of Johnson’s 23,000 followers were thrilled with the final look, comparing her to “Barbie” or a “Disney princess.”
“WOW! That turned out beautiful! And it’s absolutely perfect on you!,” wrote one admiring viewer.
The DIY dress makeover astonished one seasoned dyer. “It’s SOOOOOO pretty!!! That’s the best I’ve ever seen Rit take to something. Usually, it’s so uneven but this looks perfect!” they marveled.
Some fashion fans suggested ways for Johnson to continue elevating her prom ensemble.
“Now add a flower, crown necklace and gloves to go with it,” one advised, leaning in to the princess vibe.
Mused another, “Imagine if you cut like 2-3 inches and put petticoats or a hoop skirt to get a dreamy Dior silhouette ✨.”
The suggestion sparked an idea for Johnson, who responded, “I’ll do that after prom 🤫.”
