How to sleep like a millionaire — longevity expert shares 5 secrets
Sweet dreams are made of these five things, according to a millionaire.
Peter Diamandis, 63, a longevity investor and the founder of XPrize, a nonprofit that holds competitions to inspire people to make technological breakthroughs for the good of humanity, believes sleep is essential for overall well-being.
Diamandis, the author of “Longevity: Your Practical Playbook on Sleep, Diet, Exercise, Mindset, Medications, and Not Dying from Something Stupid,” shared with Business Insider his top five tips for getting a great night of sleep.
Invest in an Oura ring
If you like sleep, you should put a ring on it.
The $300 Oura ring, which resembles a wedding band, calculates people’s movement, temperature and heart rate throughout the day and also tracks how well they sleep.
“The Oura ring doesn’t help me sleep better,” Diamandis, an early investor in the company, told Business Insider.
“It helps me remain true to my commitment,” he said of his desire to get at least seven hours of sleep a night.
He said he tries for a sleep score of over 90%.
“I know when I’m going to sleep I am going to have a digital reckoning in the morning,” he said.
Create the perfect sleep environment
Don’t sleep on creating an optimal environment for catching Z’s.
For starters, keeping your room cool can help you get a better night’s sleep.
The Sleep Foundation says the optimal temperature for sleep is between 65 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit, but Diamandis likes his room colder.
He sets his thermostat to 63 degrees every night. He also invested in a cooling $2,550-plus mattress cover from the 2015 Y Combinator startup Eight Sleep.
“You can set the temperature to come and warm you up in the morning when you’re getting up,” Diamandis said of the product.
Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Tim Ferris, CrossFit champions, pro cyclists and some Formula 1 drivers are also said to be fans of the mattress cover.
Get an eye mask
If you need help getting shuteye, an eye mask might help.
Diamandis said his favorite accessory for getting better sleep is a $35 Manta eye mask.
“It basically blocks out all the light,” he explained.
Try a mouthguard to stop snoring
Breathe easy and try a mouth guard.
Unlike using a big CPAP machine for sleep apnea and snoring, Diamandis opts for a special mouthguard.
“I use what’s called a mandibular advancement device, which is an upper and lower mouthpiece,” he said. “That slightly juts your jaw forward, opens your airway.”
He said in addition to curbing snoring, it prevents him from grinding his teeth and gives him a “sense of comfort.”
Stick to a schedule
If you want to improve your sleep hygiene — the time is now.
Getting to bed early and around the same time every night can help you maintain a schedule for optimal sleep.
“I make every effort I possibly can to be in bed and asleep by 9:30,” Diamandis said.
“Because I’ll pop up at some time between 5:30 and 6 in the morning,” he added.
Diamandis isn’t the only wealthy eternal life-seeker to share his sleep plan. Tech mogul Bryan Johnson, who made headlines for his $2 million anti-aging regimen, has also revealed his strict bedtime routine.
