Drinking coffee on an empty stomach in morning is bad: expert

That morning cup of joe is a cup of no.

A nutritional therapist claimed that drinking coffee first thing in the morning may be doing more harm than good.

Olivia Hedlund posted the now-viral TikTok in which she warned that people who reach for that steaming cup of java on an empty stomach are more likely to be in a high-stress mode as well as upsetting their hormones.

“If you drink coffee first thing on an empty stomach, stop what you’re doing and listen. You are messing with your hormones,” Hedlund claimed.

The TikTok — which was posted in mid-September and now has 582,500 views — is part of her series on how viewers can improve their lives.

“Coffee is not only acidic, so it’s hard on our stomach in the morning, but it literally causes our bodies to go into a stress response, to shoot out cortisol, and to put us in kind of a fight-or-flight state,” she claimed.

According to the nutritionist, those jitters and shakes that people experience are a stress response to drinking coffee on an empty stomach.

“I used to drink multiple cups of coffee on an empty stomach, feel like I was on top of the world, and then I would have a bunch of hormonal acne and wonder why,” recalled Hedlund.

“It’s because your body is stressed out. Have something small before you have a coffee, make it your goal. I promise you will notice a difference,” she added.

The Post reached out to Hedlund for comment.

Hedlund also revealed her top ways she suggests to balance your hormones:

  • Take adrenal cocktails — blend four ounces of orange juice, four ounces of aloe juice or coconut water, water, coconut cream and sea salt
  • Switch coffee for a different alternative
  • Take walks after each meal
  • Increase matcha intake
  • Switch to lower-intensity workouts such as walking, hot yoga and weight lifting
  • Eat low-glycemic foods like fruit within one hour of waking up

Several of Hedlund’s followers were astounded by her suggestion about coffee, though.

“I drink coffee on an empty stomach almost every morning and this explains so much,” said one user.

“Maybe this is why I have been breaking out more recently! Thanks for the tip,” another said.

“Damn as I just sat down with my straight black coffee,” joked a third person.

A recent study found that pregnant women who consume coffee are likely to have shorter children.
