Deontay Wilder, former heavyweight champ, defiant after gun arrest

Former heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder was busted for having a 9mm handgun in his car during a traffic stop in Los Angeles on Tuesday — but the boxer remained defiant.

Wilder was pulled over in Hollywood at about 1:15 a.m. on Monday because his Rolls-Royce had illegally tinted windows and an obstructed license plate, police sources told TMZ.

Cops smelled the aroma of weed wafting from the windows, TMZ said, so they searched the car and arrested the former champ after they found marijuana and the handgun.

The boxer remained defiant about the arrest with a statement on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.

“I’d rather be safe than sorry. The End,” said the 37-year-old Wilder.

The 6-foot-7-inch fighter, most well-known for his two brutal losses to British heavyweight Tyson Fury, cooperated throughout the arrest, according to TMZ.

He was charged with possession of a concealed weapon — a felony — before being released on $35,000 bond, ESPN said.

It’s unclear how the arrest might affect the former Olympic bronze medalist’s career.

A native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, many had linked the fallen champ to a possible super fight with British heavyweight Anthony Joshua sometime later this year.

His professional record stands at 43-2-1.
