Cryptic note found at Maine home where four people were killed
Investigators discovered a cryptic note about molestation at a grisly crime scene in Maine, where a 34-year-old man who had just been released from prison allegedly killed his parents and their two friends.
Joseph Eaton has been charged with four counts of murder in the deaths of his parents – Cynthia Eaton, 62, and David Eaton, 66 – and their friends, Robert Eger, 72, and Patricia Eger, 62.
Patricia Eger’s sister made the gruesome discovery Tuesday at the couple’s home in Bowdoin after first noticing blood on the steps, according to a state police affidavit cited by the Bangor Daily News.
When she entered the house, she saw broken glass and blood splattered on the floor, as well as a body in the kitchen that was covered with a towel, according to the affidavit.
She was unable to determine if the body was Roger or David because they looked alike, but she suspected it was the former based on his clothes.
The woman then noticed an unsigned note on the kitchen island that said someone had been molested and that no one did anything about it, the news outlet reported, citing the affidavit.
The writer, who didn’t address the note to anyone, expressed a desire to be freed of pain.
The day before the quadruple murder at 1459 Augusta Road, a tearful Eaton was seen in a chilling video posted to Facebook begging for forgiveness, claiming he’s had to deal with trauma in the past — including being molested.
“Going to try to go through this, but I’m going to get emotional just talking about it, but a lot of people looking a [me] like There’s just another f–k-up, another guy that can’t get his stuff right…,” he said in the Facebook Live post.
“They claim to be Christian, but you can’t forgive somebody or understand what they go through. You can’t give someone a second chance but you say you’re Christian. Now does that make sense?” he said, without citing whom he was talking about.
Eaton added: “Just need to try and forgive me for the things I did. I’ve been dealing with trauma for a long time on things I don’t talk to people about — being molested and stuff, it destroys somebody.”
The murder suspect completed a roughly two-year stint behind bars for aggravated assault on April 14, four days before the carnage.
The bodies of the Eagers and Eaton’s mom were found inside the home, while his father was found dead in a nearby barn, officials said.
All four died of gunshot wounds, and their deaths have been ruled a homicide by the Maine Office of Chief Medical Examiner.
Later on Tuesday, police in Yarmouth, Falmouth and Cumberland responded to gunshots on southbound I-295, about 25 miles south of Bowdoin, State Police Col. Bill Ross said.
Eaton fired on three southbound vehicles and struck another vehicle going northbound “because he thought he was being followed by police,” he said.
Paige Halsey, 25, was critically injured, while her dad Sean Halsley, 51, and brother Justin Halsey, 29, suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the gunfire, officials said.
“Mr. Eaton was then taken by major crimes detectives and Portland police officers to the Portland Police Department where he gave a confession and admitted to killing his parents and his parents’ friends,” Ross told reporters.
The murder suspect, a convicted felon in Maine, Florida and Kansas, was reportedly barred from owning firearms.
Police confirmed they recovered guns at the scenes, but it’s unclear to whom they belonged. They found both small and large caliber casings rented car Eaton was driving, according to the affidavit.
Superior Court Justice Daniel Billings asked Eaton if he understood the charges but did not ask him to enter pleas because he has not yet been indicted. Eaton said that he understood them, the Bangor paper reported.
The judge also ordered him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he can assist in his own defense.
