Celebrity trainer reveals 3 favorite pre-workout snacks
The proof is in the pudding.
Megan Roup, a former Brooklyn Nets dancer who trains Dakota Johnson, Karlie Kloss, and other stars, is revealing her three favorite energy-boosting pre-workout snacks — chia pudding, carrots and hummus, and peanut butter and jelly.
“I love an afternoon snack of chia pudding made with chia seeds, almond milk and blueberries,” Roup told EatingWell last month, adding that she prefers using Califia Farms Organic Almond Milk for her blend.
Chia seeds are the key component of chia pudding — they have been shown to lower blood pressure, fight inflammation, support weight loss, and boost energy thanks to their nutritious combination of protein, fat, and fiber.
Nutrient-rich blueberries have also been praised for reducing inflammation, facilitating muscle recovery, and suppressing fatigue while aiding brain function.
Looking to try a protein-rich chia pudding? A Los Angeles bariatric coach who says she lost 70 pounds in three months swears by this “secret recipe.”
Roup and other fitness enthusiasts, meanwhile, count carrots and hummus as a pre-exercise go-to.
“When it comes to choosing the best pre-workout snack, I look for a combo that provides simple, unrefined carbohydrates (for quick fuel) and a small amount of protein, fiber or fat for extra staying power to carry you through the entire workout,” registered dietitian nutritionist, certified intuitive eating counselor and yoga teacher Kara Lydon once told Self magazine.
“Carrots provide simple carbs for fast fuel and the hummus boasts fiber to tide you over until after your workout,” Lydon continued.
And finally, Roup is also a fan of “good old-fashioned peanut butter and jelly” — a popular snack at ultramarathons.
Women’s Running Magazine calls PB&Js an “underrated running snack,” noting that whole wheat bread can contain essential vitamins, fiber and carbs; jelly boasts easily digestible simple carbs and sugars; and peanut butter features protein and healthy fats.
“Look for natural peanut butters and don’t be alarmed by the oils sitting on top of a fresh jar. Simply mix before scooping,” the outlet advised.
