Beat inflation and stretch your travel dollar by almost 50% â in this gorgeous, nearby destination
Stay close — and save big.
One of 2025’s top travel bargains doesn’t require much travel at all, according to experts who have tapped nearby Canada as one of the best values for American travelers this year.
That’s thanks not only to an enormously favorable exchange rate that has our dollar going nearly 50% further — but a modest drop in pricing north of the border as well, Kayak reported.
Right now, for every US dollar you spend above the 49th parallel, you’re getting an extra 43 cents, analysts at the booking site explained.
Saving you even more money, airfares are down 18% from 2023, the recent high, and hotel rates have dropped 7%, the pros said.
This means that some of North America’s most stunning scenery — from the remote surfing capital of Tofino, British Columbia to the charming coastal towns of Nova Scotia — will in some cases be found going for a song, or close enough.
In Calgary, an easy drive from hotspots like Lake Louise and Banff in the Canadian Rockies, for example, Americans are looking at an average hotel rate of $110, the site stated.
In scenic Vancouver, British Columbia, one of the world’s most stunningly situated cities with year-round outdoor activities thanks to a temperate climate and proximity to great skiing, the rate goes up to $195 — still a relative bargain in a destination that can often be extremely expensive.
Closer to New York, other spots like Quebec City and charming small towns like Lunenberg in coastal Nova Scotia are deeply discounted during winter and spring — far cheaper than equally appealing spots south of the border.
And don’t assume that the closest province to where you live in the US is going to be the most affordable, Kayak pointed out.
“It’s often the case that the cheapest Canadian destination … is often the closest, but in a few instances, traveling further actually gets you a better deal,” the insiders urged.
“For example, Californians can save more than $100 on average by visiting Calgary instead of Vancouver. North Carolinians can save more than $150 on average by visiting Vancouver instead of Toronto. Ohioans can save almost $200 on average by visiting Vancouver instead of Toronto. Pennsylvanians can save more than $75 on average by visiting Vancouver instead of Montreal. And Utahans can save more than $150 on average by visiting Montreal instead of Calgary,” they offered.
Kayak’s pro tips for Americans traveling to Canada
- Pack your passport. Hopefully you’re saying “well duh,” but if you’re not, here’s your reminder that yes, you need a passport to enter Canada.
- Pack warm. Like, really warm. It’s no secret that Canada’s temps plummet in the winter, but because the country is so well adapted to the cold, there’s plenty to see and do this time of year.
- Get outdoors. Canada is home to 30+ National Parks that feature ancient wilderness, jaw-dropping scenery and native wildlife.
