Prince George consoled by William after England’s Euro 2020 loss

Prince William was photographed comforting his 7-year-old son, Prince George, after England painfully lost the Euro 2020 finals to Italy on Sunday.

The young royal, who is third in the line to the throne, was pictured looking heartbroken from the stands at London’s Wembley Stadium after Italy won in overtime.

Fortunately William was there to console his oldest, affectionately gripping his shoulders and holding him close.

Kate Middleton also looked heartbroken as she stood next to George as they took in the loss of their country’s team.

Earlier in the match, Middleton, 39 — looking chic in a cream blazer, white top, black pants and bright red beaded statement earrings — was pictured covering her face at one stressful moment near the end of play.

While William — who serves as president of the Football Association — was also pained at the loss, he showed good sportsmanship and immediately congratulated the winning team.

“Heartbreaking. Congratulations @Azzurri on a great victory,” he wrote on the official Instagram page for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. “@England, you’ve all come so far, but sadly this time it wasn’t our day. You can all hold your heads high, and be so proud of yourselves — I know there’s more to come. W.”

The 39-year-old later shared a strongly worded statement after England’s black soccer players were targeted with a barrage of “racist abuse” online.

“I am sickened by the racist abuse aimed at England players after last night’s match. It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this abhorrent behaviour,” William tweeted after the match.

Players Marcus Rashford, 23, Jadon Sancho, 21, and Bukayo Saka, 19 were slammed with racist comments online after missing kicks in the penalty shootout. 

Italy won the title in a penalty kick shootout after the game went into extra time with the score tied, 1-1. The close game was a heartbreaking moment for England, as the team had never reached a final in this tournament and hadn’t done so in any major tournament since winning the World Cup in 1966.
