32 celebrities who have spoken out against Botox and fillers
In beauty- and youth-obsessed Hollywood, pressure to go under the knife is par for the course — but some stars are taking a stand against tinkering with their faces.
While a number of big names have tried Botox and fillers but regretted the decision, others have yet to give anti-aging injectables a try. Below, 32 celebrities who’ve taken a stand against filling their famous faces.
Drew Barrymore
“I’ve never done anything to my face and I would like to try not to,” the actress said during a 2021 episode of “The Drew Barrymore Show,” before adding, “Never say never.”
The “Never Been Kissed” star said she’d rather avoid injectables entirely than potentially get hooked.
I know myself. I’m a highly addictive person. I do one injection, I’m going to look like Jocelyn Wildenstein by Friday,” Barrymore quipped, referencing the socialite famous for her many cosmetic surgeries.
“We’re gonna age, things are gonna go south and it’s okay and it’s a part of life and I feel more human and more vulnerable every year of my life, but I also know how to appreciate every year more and more, too.”
Cameron Diaz
Barrymore’s “Charlie’s Angels” co-star once dabbled in injectables, but wasn’t a fan.
“I’ve tried [Botox] before, where it was like a little tiny touch of something. It changed my face in such a weird way that I was like, ‘No, I don’t want to be like that,’” Diaz told “Entertainment Tonight” in 2014.
“I’d rather see my face aging than a face that doesn’t belong to me at all.”
Jennifer Lopez
“I’m real,” indeed: The pop icon has repeatedly denied using injectables to ward off wrinkles, instead crediting her seemingly ageless complexion to SPF and, interestingly enough, olive oil.
“I haven’t ever had Botox to this day,” the JLo Beauty founder told editors during a Zoom call to discuss her skincare brand. “I’m not that person. I don’t have anything against people doing that; it’s just not my thing … I’m not saying one day I won’t, but I haven’t yet.”
Earlier in her career, Lopez added, an ex-boyfriend tried to get her to go under the needle.
“[His dermatologist] said, ‘Did you know you have a little line right here? We should start Botox.’ I mean, I had to be 23 years old, right? And I was like, ‘I’m going to pass,’” the superstar recalled.
“I just wonder what would’ve happened to me if I would’ve started Botox at 23, what I would look like right now. My face would be a totally different face today.”
Paulina Porizkova
“Everything I do is noninvasive and it’s incredibly subtle. The treatments that I prefer are the ones where you don’t look like you’ve been mauled by a bear,” the supermodel exclusively told Page Six Style in 2021, adding that while she’s a fan of lasers, she’s never tried Botox or fillers.
And while Porizkova is diligent about her skincare routine, she knows better than to expect pricey products to turn back the clock.
“Cosmetics and skin treatments are not going to do plastic surgery on you,” she said. “It’s not like you’re going to use them and you’re going to look 20 years younger. It’s not only not realistic, but it’s impossible.”
Jennifer Garner
In a 2022 Harper’s Bazaar interview, the “Alias” actress shared her best beauty advice: “Look at the mirror less and be cautious when it comes to injecting anything into your face. Be very, very incredibly judicious and wait as absolutely long as possible to add anything.”
Garner added that people could stand to prize their appearances less overall.
“Look in the mirror less, obsess less, and look at the rest of the world to see what you could be using your time for instead,” she said. “We all look at our faces more than people used to, and it doesn’t do you any good. You obsess over changes or how to fix something on your face.”
Kristin Cavallari
“People started asking me if I’d had Botox during interviews at, like, age 22. And I was so confused,” the “Laguna Beach” alum told Page Six Style in 2021.
“I have fine lines on my face! I don’t care. I’m really expressive. I like that my face moves. I’m not knocking Botox or fillers; to each their own. I just think for me and my life, it’s not for me. They scare me, to be honest, because we don’t know the long-term effects of the stuff. I think we should embrace aging!”
Halle Berry
The “Monster’s Ball” beauty admitted to feeling pressure to get plastic surgery in a 2015 Yahoo! Beauty interview.
“I won’t lie and tell you that those things don’t cross my mind, because somebody is always suggesting it to me,” she said. “’You know if you just did a little bit of this and that, lift this up, then this would be a little bit better.’ It’s almost like crack that people are trying to push on you. That’s what I feel like.”
Added Berry, “‘When you see everybody around you doing it, you have those moments when you think, ‘To stay alive in this business, do I need to do the same thing?’”
The actress said she stays grounded by reminding herself that “beauty really is as beauty does.”
“Aging is natural, and that’s going to happen to all of us,” she said. “I just want to always look like myself, even if that’s an older version of myself. I think when you do too much of that cosmetic stuff, you become somebody else in a way.”
Kim Kardashian
While the Skims founder admitted to having “a little bit of Botox” in a 2022 Allure interview, she insisted the cosmetic tinkering stops there.
“No filler,” Kardashian said. “I’ve never filled my cheeks. I’ve never filled my lips.”
Khloé Kardashian
Although Kim’s sister’s changing face has long been a hot topic, the Good American co-founder said she’s had bad experience with fillers in the past, and decided to ditch them.
“[Fillers] did not work for me. I looked crazy … I went to have it all dissolved like three times,” she said on “Kocktails With Khloé” in 2016, adding, “My face was so f—ked.”
And while Kardashian’s been open about getting a nose job — “My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner,” she tweeted in 2022 – she’s not a Botox fan.
“I’ve responded horribly to Botox,” she said during the “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” reunion special in 2021.
Julianne Moore
The Oscar winner said she’s never touched Botox, and has no future plans to do so.
“I hate to condemn people for doing it, but I don’t believe it makes people look better,” Moore told Allure in 2010. “I think it just makes them look like they had something done to their face. When you look at somebody who’s had their face altered in some way, it just looks weird.”
Nicole Kidman
In a 2011 interview with TV Movie, a German magazine, the “Big Little Lies” beauty said she “tried Botox” but swore off the stuff after being disappointed with the results.
“I didn’t like how my face looked afterwards,” she said. “Now I don’t use it anymore — I can move my forehead again!”
Kate Beckinsale
The “Underworld” actress has said she gets “pissed off” when people assume she gets Botox, telling the Sunday Times in 2021, “I haven’t had any [work done]. I’m not against people having it … It’s sort of a given that I’ve had it, which I just literally haven’t.”
While Beckinsale said she’s a fan of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) facials, which use a person’s own blood to rejuvenate the skin, as well as skincare that utilizes scorpion venom, she’s “frightened of paralyzing [her] face” with injectables.
“My mum’s voice is in my head, very loud, at all times. My mum wouldn’t even get a facial, she is suspicious of anything like that, and looks f—king radiant and amazing,” she continued. “I know if I did do Botox, I’d be the one that would get the droopy eye, and my mum would go, ‘I f—king told you! See? You should never do that.’”
Courteney Cox
The “Friends” favorite is one of many stars who regret getting work done, telling NewBeauty in 2017 that she once visited doctor after doctor in search of the fountain of youth.
“The next thing you know, you’re layered and layered and layered. You have no idea because it’s gradual until you go, ‘Oh s–t, this doesn’t look right.’ And it’s worse in pictures than in real life,” Cox recalled. “I have one friend who was like, ‘Whoa, no more!’”
After realizing she no longer looked like herself, the “Scream” star decided to make a change.
“I’ve had all my fillers dissolved. I’m as natural as I can be. I feel better because I look like myself. I think that I now look more like the person that I was. I hope I do,” she said, adding that she’s now committed to aging naturally.
“Things are going to change. Everything’s going to drop. I was trying to make it not drop, but that made me look fake. You need movement in your face, especially if you have thin skin like I do. Those aren’t wrinkles — they’re smile lines. I’ve had to learn to embrace movement and realize that fillers are not my friend.”
Jennifer Aniston
Cox’s “Friends” co-star shared a similar stance in 2014, telling InStyle, “I believe in ‘no-tox.’ It absolutely distorts peoples faces and you end up actually having the opposite effect. You look older, in my opinion, when you can’t move and don’t let your natural expressions have their way.”
Kate Winslet
The “Titanic” star told the Telegraph in 2011 that she’ll “never give in” to pressure to go under the knife.
“I am an actress, I don’t want to freeze the expression of my face,” Winslet said. “It goes against my morals, the way that my parents brought me up and what I consider to be natural beauty.”
Salma Hayek
“I don’t believe in Botox because your face doesn’t move, and it’s something you have to do for the rest of your life, more and more every time,” the “Frida” actress told DuJour in 2017.
“I don’t look at things short term; I think of longevity. Listen, if there was something you could do that would keep you looking good, I would do it. But I’m in love with my husband, and I want to look like a lovely lady when I’m 70.”
Hayek, who’s clapped back at trolls for assuming she’s gotten anti-aging injections, did tell ET she “was so excited” to try Botox as a way to get into character for her role as makeup mogul Claire Luna in 2020’s “Like a Boss,” but her back-to-back filming schedule prevented her from following through.
“Maybe it’s for the best,” she told the outlet. “Maybe I would have gotten addicted to it or something.”
Stevie Nicks
The Fleetwood Mac crooner has taken perhaps the strongest stance against injectables of any celeb.
“Let me tell you, Botox only makes you look like you’re in a satanic cult,” she told the Guardian in 2020.
“I only had it once and it destroyed my face for four months. I would look in the mirror and try and lift my eyebrow and go, ‘Oh, there you are, Satan’s angry daughter.’ Never again.”
Julia Roberts
“It’s unfortunate that we live in such a panicked, dysmorphic society where women don’t even give themselves a chance to see what they’ll look like as older persons. I want to have some idea of what I’ll look like before I start cleaning the slates,” the “Erin Brockovich” beauty told Elle in 2010.
“I want my kids to know when I’m pissed, when I’m happy, and when I’m confounded. Your face tells a story … and it shouldn’t be a story about your drive to the doctor’s office.”
Emma Thompson
The British icon shared her candid thoughts on Botox and injectables in a 2014 interview with Hello!, describing the constant pressure to undergo cosmetic procedures as “psychotic.”
“It’s mad,” she said. “It’s not a normal thing to do, and the culture that we’ve created that says it’s normal, is not normal.”
Added Thompson, “Why do people ask persons to cut them open and put things into their body? … What is that, what are we doing to ourselves? It’s chronically unhealthy.”
Angelina Jolie
“I haven’t had anything done, and I don’t think I will. But if it makes somebody happy then that’s up to them,” the “Maleficent” star told the Daily Mail in 2010.
“I’m not in somebody else’s skin to know what makes them feel better about themselves, but I don’t plan to do it myself.”
Busy Philipps
“People have actually accused me of work,” the actress and social media star said during an appearance on the “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast in 2022, before revealing that she’s had “no Botox, no fillers.”
“I get disappointed when very young women start to f—k with their faces,” the “Freaks and Geeks” star continued, saying that her own face looked “totally different” when she was a teenager, but changed as she had children, switched up her workouts and fluctuated in weight.
“My only point is that … 23-year-olds, calm down … Your face is going to change … you lose the baby fat,” Philipps concluded.
Simon Cowell
Once upon a time, the “X Factor” and “America’s Got Talent” creator was all about injectables, but he’s since seen the error of his ways.
“There was a stage where I might have gone a bit too far. I saw a picture of me from ‘before’ the other day, and didn’t recognize it as me first of all,” he told The Sun in 2022, adding that he looked “like something out a horror film.”
“Enough was enough,” Cowell continued. “There is no filler in my face at all now. Zero.”
Bethenny Frankel
Frankel may not be a “Real Housewife” anymore, but she’s still keeping it real.
“I’ve earned these lines,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories in 2020, adding that she has “no filler … Look at my mouth. These lips don’t lie.”
That same day, the Skinnygirl founder shared a makeup-free, unedited selfie, writing, “The more I see photos on social media that are filtered, contoured, eyelashed, extensioned, & retouched – the more important it is to post #nofilter, real, everyday photos.”
Shannen Doherty
The “Beverly Hills, 90210” star sounded off on showbiz beauty standards in a candidInstagram post in 2021, writing, “Watching movies tonight and noticed there were few female characters I could relate to. You know, women without fillers, without Botox, without a facelift. Women who embraced their face and all the experience it showed.”
Continued Doherty, “I have lived. I love that I’ve lived and that my face reflects my life. I survived a lot yes cancer but more than that. I embrace me now. Finally. Done with the perception magazines and Hollywood try to make us in to [sic].”
The actress concluded by calling for more natural beauties in the entertainment industry: “I want to see women like me. Women like us.”
Pink
The “So What” singer shared a “letter to self” on Twitter in 2020, writing that she’s “getting older” but committed to “AGE THE OL FASHIONED WAY.”
“Every once in a while you consider altering your face, and then you watch a show where you want to see what the person is feeling… and their face doesn’t move. I’m cannot get behind it. I just can’t,” she continued, adding, “I want my children to know what I look like when I’m angry.”
Meryl Streep
In a 2009 interview with Vanity Fair, Streep said she’s staunchly opposed to getting Botox — or any cosmetic surgery, for that matter.
“When I see it in people I meet, it’s like an interruption in communication with them,” she said. “It’s like a flag in front of the view, and that, for an actor, is like wearing a veil — it’s not a good thing.”
Olivia Wilde
While speaking with Byrdie, the “Booksmart” director said she “can’t get down” with injectables.
“I’m not into plastic surgery, which I would categorize as a beauty trend. I think a lot of the fillers freak me out, and Botox makes everyone look like a wax candle, kind of like Madame Tussaud-esque weird — I can’t get down with it,” Wilde said.
“I mean, I don’t want to be judgmental, but at the moment, that’s a beauty trend I loathe.”
Amanda Peet
“I’ve never gotten Botox or fillers,” the “Something’s Gotta Give” star said on SiriusXM’s “Conversations with Maria Menounos” in 2016. “I’ve never done anything to my face that’s, I guess you would say, ‘invasive.’”
Admitted Peet, “I’ve certainly spent a lot of time and money doing other stuff and I certainly am vain and it’s hypocritical,” adding that she’s had facials and laser treatments — but that plastic surgery is “probably” off the table.
“Maybe I’m afraid. I’m afraid … it’s like I’ve never done cocaine either!” she quipped.
Bella Hadid
The supermodel told Vogue in 2022 that contrary to popular rumor, her face is filler-free.
“People think I fully f–ked with my face because of one picture of me as a teenager looking puffy. I’m pretty sure you don’t look the same now as you did at 13, right?” she told the magazine, adding, “I have never used filler. Let’s just put an end to that. I have no issue with it, but it’s not for me.”
Hadid did say she got a nose job when she was 14, but regrets that decision.
“I wish I had kept the nose of my ancestors,” she told Vogue. “I think I would have grown into it.”
Jamie Lee Curtis
The “Halloween” icon urged people to run away from the knife in a 2021 interview.
“The current trend of fillers and procedures, and this obsession with filtering, and the things that we do to adjust our appearance on Zoom are wiping out generations of beauty,” Curtis told Fast Company, adding, “Once you mess with your face, you can’t get it back.”
It’s a lesson the actress learned firsthand in 1989, when she was prescribed painkillers following a cosmetic procedure and developed a years-long opioid addiction.
“I tried plastic surgery and it didn’t work. It got me addicted to Vicodin. I’m 22 years sober now,” Curtis said.
Emilia Clarke
The “Game of Thrones” beauty once shut down a facialist who told her she “needed fillers” when she was just 28 years old.
“I showed her the door,” Clarke told Elle UK. “I was literally just like, ‘get out.’ Her exact words were, ‘Then, you can have your face back.’
Added the actress, “I work in an industry where I’ve got to move my face, and I’ve got to be expressive, and you can’t light filler … you look shiny and strange.”
Clarke also said that while she’s never gotten Botox (and is “petrified” to give it a go), she isn’t ruling it out for the future.
Tina Fey
“I don’t do Botox or any of that stuff, and I hope I never do,” the “30 Rock” funnywoman told InStyle. “I’m just going to keep using firming creams and try to bring back hats with chin straps.”
