Passengers wearing crop tops claim ‘sexist’ flight attendant kicked them off Spirit Airlines plane: ‘Treated like a criminal’
They didn’t appreciate the so-called inflight fashion policing.
Two female passengers have accused a Spirit Airlines flight attendant of sexism after he allegedly kicked them off a plane for their choice of dress, as seen in a viral Instagram video.
“It’s just humiliating having to be escorted and treated like a criminal just because we were wearing crop tops,” one of the flyers, named Tara, told the Daily Mail while detailing the alleged blouse arrest.
She and her friend Teresa were flying from Los Angeles to New Orleans to celebrate the former’s birthday when the crewmember singled them out.
The pair had reportedly boarded the plane in pants in sweaters, but removed them to cool off, which prompted said flight attendant to chastise them over their choice of runway attire.
“We were harassed by a male flight attendant who told us to ‘cover up’ because we were wearing crop tops,” Teresa wrote.
Things reportedly got heated after Tara asked the alleged sartorial steward what policy they violated.
A video of the spat shows the flight attendants telling the pair to turn the camera off as they protest their purported mean Spirit-ed treatment.
“There’s nothing that says you can’t hold a crop top,” splutters one of the duo in the clip. “Dude just chill.”
“What’s the problem I don’t understand,” says another.
At one point, a fellow passenger declares “a business can’t treat humans this way.”
Teresa wrote in the caption that “everyone else (including flight staff) agreed though that there was nothing wrong with what we were wearing and that crop tops are not against their dress code.”
However, they claimed that crewmembers reprimanded passengers who tried sticking up for them, including a lady with a toddler.
Eventually, the situation escalated to the point where the flyers were booted from the aircraft without a refund.
“He then continued to treat us poorly and give us no reasoning as to why he wanted to kick us off,” Teresa wrote. “Other passengers joined in and tried defending us but ultimately a supervisor lied to us and told either we would leave the flight or she would bring the police.”
She added. “She told us she would rebook our flight and then once out of the plane she said there are no flights and also refused a refund.”
As a result, the travelers had to fork over $1,000 to book a new flight on a different airline.
“This is appalling service, that in 2024 we are getting kicked out of a plane for ONE MALE flight attendant not liking our shirts,” fumed Teresa. “Everyone working at the airport agreed this was an act of prejudice, discrimination and misogynist and that we should take legal actions. We spoke with the police which said the same.”
Tara and Teresa have since contacted Spirit over the couture kerfuffle but have not heard back.
According to the airline’s contract of carriage, a passenger may be asked to vacate the aircraft if “inadequately clothed” or if their attire “is lewd, obscene, or offensive in nature.”
However, the pair claimed that they contacted an airline representative, who told them they weren’t in violation of the budget carrier’s sartorial standards.
“We called Spirit support and they’ve even said there’s nothing against crop tops on their dress code,” Tara insisted.
