Hailey Bieber’s ‘brownie glazed lips’ spark backlash
This is one dessert people aren’t enjoying.
Hailey Bieber’s no stranger to causing a social media stir with her beauty tutorials; fans went wild for her “glazed donut” nails this summer, and her signature skincare trend of the same name even inspired the launch of her own line, Rhode.
But Bieber’s “brownie glazed lips” have people talking for all the wrong reasons.
Back in September, Justin Bieber’s wife shared her latest makeup look on TikTok with the caption, “ready for all the fall things including brownie glazed lips” — and now, a number of commenters are calling her out for cultural appropriation.
Bieber created her lip look using a brown liner and clear gloss — and while she didn’t claim to have invented the effect, she also didn’t mention the fact that women of color have been rocking the same look for decades.
One commenter wrote, “90’s LATINA LIPS love that you took inspiration from them,” as another wrote, “So basically the exact same color combo our tias have been using 😂.”
“my mommy & all latinas ate this look up in the early 2000s,” a third added.
In a clip that’s racked up 2.4 million views thus far, TikToker Benulus said that she constantly receives negative comments about her own glossy brown lip look before taking aim at Bieber.
“Y’all s—t on my lips every single time I post. But a white woman does it, it’s gonna become a trend,” she said.
“Yeah, I’m so flattered that Hailey Bieber always gets inspired by my community, by the POC community, but it just irks me that because she’s done it now, it’s gonna become so trendy.”
In another upload, TikTok user ZZHilton said, “It doesn’t hit the right way when you try to pass on a brown lip liner as your own idea and call it a ‘brownie’ lip liner when this has very obviously been created by women of color, considering how long women of color had to fight for brands to stop naming darker shades after food.”
And Iris Beilin sarcastically captioned her TikTok, “Wow!!! I have never seen something like this!!! 🫥🫥🫥 #brownieglazedlips”
“This is innovative,” she cracked, declining to call out Bieber by name while still making her feelings about the “trend” completely clear.
