2 NYC hotels make list of world’s 50 best
Time to check in!
The world’s 50 best hotels of 2023 have been revealed by a group of 580 global hotel industry experts, including hoteliers and travel journalists.
Passalacqua in Moltrasio, Italy, earned the top spot in the inaugural ranking. The beautiful resort overlooking Lake Como opened in June 2022 to quick acclaim.
“It’s a big recognition,” Passalacqua owner Valentina De Santis told CNN. “We are a family-owned independent hotel. And we’re quite small. We just opened one year ago. It was really unexpected. And it was beyond our wildest dreams to get to the top part of the top 25. So we couldn’t be prouder.”
NYC made the list twice, with Aman New York (No. 25), which opened in Midtown in August 2022, and Equinox Hotel New York in Hudson Yards (No. 48).
“We’re honored to be awarded in the World’s 50 Best Hotels 2023. This recognition reaffirms an innovative product that is truly unique and differentiated,” Chris Norton, CEO of Equinox Hotels, said in a statement.
“We are redefining luxury for a new mindset and providing an unparalleled experience for a community of high performers who want it all.”
The Post reached out to Aman for comment.
The smallest property honored is Singita Lodges in Kruger National Park in South Africa, which came in at No. 15 and also received the Eco Hotel Award.
The De Santis family also owns Lake Como’s Grand Hotel Tremezzo, just a short drive down the road.
“It was a villa where a very noble family from Lake Como were spending holidays,” said De Santis, who described Passalacqua as a “love affair” explained.
The 18th-century property, once owned by Pope Innocent XI, was a former home of one of Italy’s most famous opera composers, Vincenzo Bellini.
The villa reopened as the Passalacqua in June 2022, welcoming guests in just 24 rooms.
Three buildings sit on 7 acres on the edge of one of Italy’s most popular and breathtaking destinations.
Guests can stay in the 12-room main villa, which features Bellini’s own music room and piano; the eight-room Palazz, converted from the stables; or the four-room villa by the lake with a private dining area and fireplace.
The green terraced gardens are dotted with 15 water fountains, a bocce court, al fresco gym, olive grove and tennis court.
