Texas couple kidnapped at gunpoint found after being ‘targeted’: cops
A mom and dad kidnapped at gunpoint in front of their five underaged kids have been rescued from what Texas police say was a “targeted” abduction.
Samantha Esquivel-Zuniga, 38, and Ricky Zuniga, 37 were taken by force from their San Antonio home Wednesday morning by several armed gunman who loaded them into a waiting SUV as their five young children watched in horror.
“The detectives, through their investigation, quickly realized that this was a targeted kidnapping; it wasn’t a random act,” Sgt. Washington Moscoso of the San Antonio Police Department said Thursday.
“It wasn’t just these individuals picked a house. This was a targeted aggravated kidnapping to this particular family. At no point during this instance was the general public in any kind of danger.”
Police refused to name the motive for the crime.
After the extremely rare kidnapping in the Alamo City, law enforcement, including the San Antonio Police Department, FBI and Homeland Security Investigations, worked through the night to locate the duo.
Thursday, the cops started to moved in on a house in the western part of the city, but before they could make entry, the doors opened and the couple walked out.
“People started just coming out of the house,” police described. “All the officers that were there, started … securing them to identify them.”
The parents were checked out by medics on the scene and then reunited with their kids.
There were no other victims among the group, but police arrested two men who were later determined to be the hostage-takers.
The alleged kidnappers, Felipe Valdez, 40, and Xhavier Martinez, 29, were arrested at the home.
A third man remains on the run. Police said they know his identity but did not want to name him.
“F–k all y’all,” Martinez shouted at members of the press as he was walked out of police headquarters in handcuffs Thursday, before adding again “F–k you!”
Police say the foul-mouthed suspect had outstanding arrest warrants in unrelated cases, including one for deadly conduct, evading arrest and interfering with public duties.
