Julio Urias arrest, Lionel Messi match intersect in Hollywood

Two of the biggest sports stories from Labor Day weekend were Lionel Messi’s star-studded appearance in Hollywood and the arrest of Dodgers left-hander Julio Urias for being accused of domestic violence.

As it turns out, the two distinctly different situations crossed paths.

The Daily Mail reported that Urias was arrested Sunday at 11 p.m. PST at Exposition Park, which includes BMO Stadium, the site of the Messi match that had ended an hour earlier.

Urias was on the guest list for the signature MLS showdown, along with A-listers such as Prince Harry, Selena Gomez and Leonardo DiCaprio.

It’s unclear if Urias made his way into the stadium to watch Inter Miami’s 3-1 win over LAFC.

Urias was released Monday morning on $50,000 bail and is due back in court on Sept. 27 after being charged with felony domestic violence.

The Dodgers posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that they “are aware of an incident involving Julio Urías. While we attempt to learn all the facts, he will not be traveling with the team. The organization has no further comment at this time.”

In addition, Major League Baseball is investigating the case, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Urias previously was involved in a domestic violence incident in 2019 when he was accused of arguing with a woman and pushing her to the ground.

Urias was not charged after the alleged victim told investigators she fell, but he was suspended 20 games by MLB under the Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy.

The 27-year-old southpaw is slated to be a free agent following the 2023 World Series.

He has a 4.60 ERA in 21 starts this year but led the NL last season with a career-best 2.16 ERA, setting him up to be one of the top pitchers on the open market before Sunday night’s arrest put his baseball future on hold.
