Three UK men accused of gang-raping tourist in latest sexual assault in Mallorca
Three UK tourists allegedly drugged and gang-raped an 18-year-old British woman at a hotel in Spain – the third recent case of sexual assaults against young women in a resort town on the island of Mallorca.
The three suspects looked down and covered up when they were photographed Saturday while being escorted by police to a court in the capital of Palma, The Sun reported.
Police arrested the men, believed to be in their early 20s, at Palma Son Sant Joan Airport on Friday afternoon as they tried to board a flight to Manchester, England.
“The Civil Guard has arrested three young men as the suspected authors of a crime of sexual aggression on a woman at a hotel in Calvià,” a spokesman for the agency said in a statement.
The incident occurred in Magaluf, which is part of the municipality of Calvià in Mallorca.
Two of the suspects were being investigated on suspicion of raping the woman and the third on suspicion of doing nothing to prevent the alleged sexual assault, officials said.
“This morning a central response unit received an alert about a possible sexual aggression from a hotel in the municipality,” the police rep said, according to the news outlet.
“A police patrol went to the hotel and spoke to a young tourist who told them she had been raped in the early hours of this morning by men she had met the night before,” the spokesman continued.
“She also said she had suffered chemical submission, given that she felt completely unwell possibly because of the consumption of some type of drug. She said she didn’t know the identity of the alleged aggressors, just the nickname one of them used on a social network,” he said.
The spokesman said the suspects left their hotel and planned to grab a flight back to the UK but were stopped at the airport minutes before boarding.
Earlier this month, five French tourists and one Swiss national were arrested on suspicion of gang-raping another British woman at the same hotel, where staff reported they discovered her crying in desperation.
The alleged victim told authorities she met the men Aug. 14, went to the hotel room of one of the suspects and was subsequently sexually assaulted by all six.
A judge found video clips of the alleged rape on at least one of the suspects’ phones, officials said.
The alleged rapists were held in a local jail pending the investigation and were not immediately charged.
In mid-July, six young German men were arrested for allegedly gang-raping an 18-year-old German tourist at a hotel in Playa de Palma in Mallorca, is known for its Mediterranean beaches, wineries and nightlife, making it a top European tourist destination.
She teen eventually able to flee and alerted a hotel receptionist who called the authorities.
Another British tourist also was arrested in May at Palma Airport on suspicion of raping his son’s female friend and allegedly trying to flee the country.
The suspects in all the cases have not been identified. Gang rape can carry sentences of up to 15 years behind bars under Spanish law.
