Alex Morgan speaks out on USWNT’s early World Cup exit

Alex Morgan isn’t taking to the U.S. Women’s National Team’s disappointing World Cup loss well.

The U.S. soccer legend penned a heartfelt message on Instagram on Thursday, four days after the team was eliminated by Sweden on penalty kicks during the Round of 16.

“It hurts and it will for a while but this wound will eventually turn into a scar,” Morgan wrote. “Another reminder that we compete because we want to be the best, measure ourselves against the top in the world. This time, we came up short. We know that and I own that.

“I’m so proud of the effort, the fight, and belief of this group. I stand by each and every one of these players and reaffirm that we poured everything into this World Cup,” she continued. “This game shows you the highest of highs and lowest of lows. It can be brutal but this wound will not only heal but will serve as a defining moment in the history of USWNT — one we will grow and be stronger for.”

The USWNT came into the tournament having won the last two World Cups and were the overwhelming favorite to make it three straight titles.

It was the first time in the 32-year history of the Women’s World Cup that the U.S. team was knocked out before the quarterfinal round.

Morgan, 34, was playing in her fourth World Cup and what could be her final World Cup.

After the loss, she implied that she intends to continue her soccer career — for now.

“I’m not planning to hang up my boots anytime soon,” she said, according to Sports Illustrated. “Right now it’s just one day at a time now.”

Morgan’s comments come one day after her teammate, Megan Rapinoe posted a statement of her own to the social media platform.

“This game is so beautiful, even in its cruelest moments,” Rapinoe wrote. “This group was so very special, and I am immensely proud of every single one of us. This team is in special hands as I walk away, just like it always was, and always will be.

“Because that is what this team is all about. We lay it all out on the line every single time. Fighting with everything that we have, for everything we deserve, for every person we possibly can.”
