USWNT gets wake-up call in 2023 World Cup tie with Netherlands
For the first time in a long time, the U.S. Women’s National Team looked vulnerable on Wednesday.
And for the first time since 2011 against Sweden, the U.S. Women’s National Team dropped points in the group stage at the World Cup.
A 1-1 draw against the Netherlands is not quite a five-alarm fire, but it is a wake-up call for a team that did not show up for the first half on Wednesday and looked in real danger of losing the match entirely.
Thanks to some heroics from Lindsey Horan, they ended up dodging the bullet.
Following a disastrous 45 minutes in which the U.S. went down 1-0, they quickly started to pressure the Dutch.
After Horan was knocked down by Danielle van de Donk, she got back at her Lyon teammate by scoring on the ensuing corner kick to tie the game at 1-1 at 63 minutes.
