USWNT heads to opening World Cup match in classy business attire
The U.S. Women’s National Team has made its intentions clear to kick off its first 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup match: they’re all business.
On Friday, the squad left its hotel decked out in business attire on their way to the first match against Vietnam in the group stage round.
The women sported suits with a United States logo on the right chest while some adorned flashy sunglasses to finish off the look.
Fans surrounded the bus as the women headed to the game, chanting “USA” while taking videos and holding handmade signs in support of the team.
Before the World Cup, Nike announced it was working with Martine Rose in designing suits for the USWNT that would include a “player’s suit jacket, trouser, trench and shirt; accessories, including stockings, gloves and sunglasses.”
“When a woman wears a suit, it expresses strength, resilience and beauty,” Rose said in a Nike release. “I want women to feel powerful in their suits like men do. More than that, although I’m using women to tell the story, there’s no gender attached to the suit. Anyone can wear it. I hope one day we’re not talking about gender in sport and are just talking about the sport.
“Once everything is stripped back, it’s just the game that’s left.”
The US enters the tournament as the hunted as the reigning World Cup champions after beating the Netherlands 2-0 in the 2019 championship.
The team can take its first step toward a title defense at 9 p.m. ET on Friday.
