Lionel Messi takes selfie with fan in trip to Florida Publix
Lionel Messi is proving that he is a man of the people ahead of his move to Inter Miami and the MLS.
The soccer superstar was spotted out the supermarket chain Publix on Thursday buying groceries, one day after he arrived in Miami with his wife Antonella and three kids, according to the Daily Mail.
Messi, 36, is getting ready to join the MLS side later this month and is expected to make $54 million per year in his deal with Miami.
Messi appeared to have a number of sugary cereal boxes loaded in his cart as he headed for the checkout and fans stopped him to take pictures.
Thursday, which was Messi’s second full day in South Florida, had been an action-packed day for the star.
Aside from his jaunt to the well-known grocery chain, Messi attended an Inter Miami training session and met with his new teammates, according to ESPN.
Messi underwent his team physical Wednesday.
The Argentine icon announced on June 7 that he would be signing with Inter Miami, in what has been described as a coup for the MLS and could be a boon for the sport in the US.
He is expected to be introduced in an event on Sunday at DRV PNK Stadium, which is being called “The Unveil” by the team.
In an interview with Argentina TV, Messi committed to doing all that he can to help the struggling MLS team.
Inter Miami has won just five games all season long and is dead last in the Eastern Conference.
“My mentality and my head are not going to change, and I am going to try, wherever I have to be, give my best for myself and my new club, continue to perform at the highest level,” Messi told Argentine TV.
Messi is headed to the United States after playing the past two seasons for Paris Saint-Germain.
He has scored 496 goals in domestic league games since 2004.
