Heather Glenn killed in struggle with Sean Hubert in Indiana hospital

A well-respected Indiana police sergeant was fatally shot during a struggle Monday when she tried to arrest a domestic abuse suspect inside a hospital, according to authorities.

Sgt. Heather Glenn of Tell City police was killed while trying to detain 34-year-old Sean Hubert just before 1 a.m. Monday, state police said in a news release.

Glenn tried to subdue the man with the help of an “electronic-controlled weapon but it was ineffective,” police said before Hubert pulled a gun “and Sergeant Glenn was shot.”

Hubert was also killed when officers fired at him, state police Sgt. John Davis said during a press conference streamed locally.

Both sergeant and suspect were pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our police department suffered a tremendous loss,” said Tell City police chief Derrick Lawalin during a press conference. “We’ve lost a dear colleague, a dear friend.”

He said hospital staff displayed a “valiant effort” in trying to save Glenn after she was shot.

Leading up to the tragic shooting, Glenn, a 20-year law enforcement veteran, was investigating a domestic dispute between Hubert and a female victim, state police said.

Glenn spoke with the victim when she reached Perry County Memorial Hospital to receive treatment for her injuries, authorities said.

Glenn and other officers began a search for Hubert, but were called back to the hospital when the victim told hospital staff that the alleged abuser was on his way to the medical center.

Lawalin said during the press conference that Glenn was a “cornerstone of our department.”

“We are extremely heartbroken,” he said.

Davis, the state police spokesperson, said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

“The Indiana State Police would like to offer our condolences to all the families involved in this situation,” Davis said. “We would also like to offer our condolences to the agencies and everyone that served with Sergeant Glenn.”
