Three killed, 27 injured — including 5-year-old girl — over bloody Chicago holiday weekend
At least three people were killed and 27 others injured — including a 5-year-old girl and 85-year-old man — during a series of Fourth of July weekend shootings across Chicago, police said.
Officials recorded the first murder at the start of the holiday Friday night in Chicago Lawn, where four men were gathered on the 6300th block of South Artesian Avenue when a black Dodge Charger pulled up and fired at the group around 8:15 p.m., CBS 2 reports.
A man, 23, was shot in the butt and killed, while two other men, 24 and 27, were shot in the leg and hospitalized, police said.
The oldest of the group, 58, also suffered a gunshot wound to the hip and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he and the other survivors were listed in good condition.
The second homicide took place late Saturday when a teen and two others were shot in the Archer Heights neighborhood, police said.
Officials said the three people were standing in the street when a passing silver sedan opened fire just before 8 p.m., killing the teenager and injuring a 19-year-old man and 52-year-old woman.
The final murder took place minutes later, when a man was shot multiple times while walking in West Englewood at 8:31 p.m, police said.
Police said the victim, whose name and age were not made available, was quickly rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities said they were actively investigating the fatal shootings, along with a series of other incidents that plagued the Windy City over the weekend.
A little girl, elderly man and at least three teens were wounded in the gunfire.
Just hours after the first homicide, police said a 16-year-old boy was in West Englewood around 1:30 a.m. when he was shot in the arm after hearing gunfire breakout.
The boy was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was said to be in good condition. It remains unclear if the boy was shot by the same people who killed the third murder victim in the same neighborhood later that day.
At around the same time the boy was shot in West Englewood, gunfire broke out in River North, where a 26-year-old man suffered several gunshot wounds. He was listed in critical condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
By 2:45 a.m., two teenage boys, ages 15 and 16, were hit in a drive-by shooting in Englewood near the 400 block of West 75th Street.
Police said the boys were walking on the sidewalk when a gray truck drove up to them and began shooting, hitting the 15-year-old in the right leg and the older boy in the right arm.
The boys were rushed to area hospitals, where they were listed in good condition.
The gunfire continued into Saturday morning when an 85-year-old man was shot during an attempted robbery in Chatham.
Then, just after 6:30 p.m., police said a male victim and a 5-year-old girl were shot in the Lawndale neighborhood, with the child grazed in the foot by a bullet. Both victims were listed in good condition.
In total, three people have died and 27 others were injured as Chicago continues to contend with an uptick of violent crimes.
During last year’s holiday weekend, the city saw 30 shooting victims, including eight who were fatally wounded.
