Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny’s Soccer Team Scores Historic Win
The soccer club at the center of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney‘s FX docu-series Welcome to Wrexham has secured a league promotion after a historic win.
Fans of the team celebrated with the athletes and two celebrities after a 3-1 victory over Welsh soccer club Boreham Wood, resulting in a promotion from the National League to League Two.
Footage from the milestone game, which you can view below, will certainly be featured in the show’s upcoming season.
“Congratulations @Wrexham_AFC! A club with such amazing history, looking forward to a very exciting future back in the Football League. Doing Wales proud,” read a tweet from the official account of The Prince and Princess of Wales, who celebrated the win.
The Wrexham AFC account, acknowledging the end to their 15-year football league exile, tweeted: “WE ARE CHAMPIONS! AFTER 15 YEARS, WE ARE BACK IN THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE!”
This was not Wrexham’s first major victory as the team also upset Coventry (a team three tiers above) 4-3 earlier in the season. After that win, Reynolds said he was “totally speechless” when sharing the exciting news on social media.
The FX docuseries, which centers on Wrexham co-owners Reynolds and McElhenney as they attempt to revive the team, first premiereid August 2022. According to Deadline, Wrexham is the third-oldest professional association soccer team in the world going back to 1864.
Season 2 of the series has been filming this season and will document the team’s incredible rise to victory.
