One dead, suspect in custody in Oklahoma college shooting

One man is dead and another in custody after a “domestic situation” sparked a shooting inside an Oklahoma college on Monday, according to authorities.

Police were dispatched to Rose State College shortly after 12:30 p.m. local time on an active shooter alert, with school officials immediately placing the school on lockdown.

Cops on campus responded to the alert and found the victim with a fatal gunshot wound — and confronted the gunman, Midwest City Police Chief Sid Porter said.

“They ordered him to drop the gun, which he did, and they took him into custody,” the chief said.

Police have not identified the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, nor the suspect and have not provided a motive.

Porter said the men were “acquainted through a domestic situation.” It is not immediately known if they are students, faculty members, campus employees or visitors to the school.

The chief told KOCO-TV on Monday that the two men got into a dispute near the administrative building and the encounter escalated until the suspected shooter pulled out a gun and opened fire.

“Appears when the subject came out that the suspect confronted the victim and was shot one time, and he is deceased,” Porter told the outlet. “Your loved ones are probably texting and calling. Everyone is safe. We only have one victim, and everyone else is still OK.”

“Things got locked down real quick,” Porter said. “I just think they did a fantastic job listening to the school and everybody staying down and not panicking because we didn’t know what was going on.”

The 13,000-student campus is about eight miles outside of downtown Oklahoma City.

School officials issued an alert shortly after the shots rang out.

“ROSE ALERT,” the school posted on Twitter. “We are currently experiencing an active shooter situation on campus. Please shelter in place and follow instructions from law enforcement officials.

“The shooter is in custody and police are on the scene.”

In a follow-up tweet, the school issued the all-clear and canceled classes.

“All classes at Rose State College have been canceled for the remainder of the day… as well as tomorrow,” it said. “Our top priority at this time is the well-being of our students, faculty and staff.

“We understand that this event has been deeply distressing for our community and we are currently working to coordinate counseling services for those in need,” the announcement said. “We will be alerting our students, faculty and staff as soon as these services become available.”
