Ellynora ridiculed on social media over botched national anthem
Italian-American singer Ellynora went through a rollercoaster of emotions Thursday after her performance of the U.K.’s national anthem didn’t go as planned.
Ellynora received harsh reviews on social media after she stumbled over the lyrics to “God Save the King” — and appeared startled while fidgeting with her earpiece — ahead of England’s 2-1 Euro qualifying win over Italy.
In a tearful interview with the Daily Mail, Ellynora apologized to fans and explained that her botched performance was due to technical issues.
“I’m just so angry with what happened because I wanted it to be perfect but what happened wasn’t my fault,” the 28-year-old Ellynora said.
“I want to say sorry to all the England fans who were at the stadium and watching on TV. I’m mortified for what happened and I want people to know that I wasn’t being disrespectful.”
Ellynora was subjected to further backlash after posting a photo of herself holding up a peace sign with the caption, “England I hope you enjoyed my gift.”
The post has since been deleted.
“It was such an honor to be asked to sing the national anthem and I was so excited about it. I’ve never sung anything like that before,” Ellynora told the outlet.
The singer then elaborated on the technical difficulties, explaining she had a problem with her earpiece.
“I’m more of a pop artist but at the ground there was a sound issue,” Ellynora said.
“I had rehearsed the anthem twice the day before the match and then on the night three times but when it came to the actual performance, I had a problem with my earpiece.
“I had the music in my ear and then it stopped and started again, and I was hearing it twice, so it meant I was out of sync, and it was hard for me to catch up.
“I really tried my best to solve the problem but there was nothing I could do and I’m so angry about it. I was trying to adjust my singing to catch up with the anthem in the stadium, but it was too late.”
England moved to the top of Group C with the victory over Italy at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples.
