Emiliano Martínez makes vulgar gesture with trophy after World Cup
Qatar might not be too happy with Emiliano Martinez.
After winning the tournament’s Golden Glove award, Martinez celebrated by putting the trophy — which is shaped like a hand — to his crotch and pumping.
On the Fox coverage, one broadcaster could be heard saying, “Oh no,” after the gesture. On BBC, one person said, “No, don’t do that, Emi. Don’t do that.”
Martinez, 30, played the hero for Argentina in their 2022 World Cup win over France with a stunning kick save in the dying embers of extra time and a penalty save on Kingsley Coman to help seal the victory. He was emotional afterward, crying tears of joy, but by the time the ceremony came around, he had evidently calmed down enough to joke.
It’s not clear whether Martinez will face any discipline, but it would be surprising to see anything come from the Argentinian federation, given that it just won its first World Cup in 36 years, with the goalkeeper to thank.
More likely, everyone involved will hope that this is merely forgotten about.

Given the magnitude of the final, Qatar will almost certainly be depending on that strategy for a multitude of other storylines about this World Cup.
