3 million COVID-19 cases reported across US in November

A record 3 million new coronavirus cases have already been reported across the US during November — but millions of Americans still defied health warnings against air travel to catch flights over the weekend.

Even though there is still a week left, November has already seen more new cases than any other month — with the 3 million new cases tallied equaling around a quarter of the almost 12.25 million cases so far in the US, CNN noted.

At least a million of those were last week, according to the Covid Tracking Project — which noted that weekly cases have more than doubled since the beginning of the month.

As of Sunday, a record 83,782 Americans were in hospitals because of the pandemic, the project said — obliterating the previous record of 59,924 hospitalizations nationwide in April.

In 44 states, the percentage of positive tests is higher than the recommended 5 percent threshold, CNN noted.

But even as cases soar across the nation, millions are defying warnings against air travel for the holidays and taking to the skies to see loved ones in time for Thanksgiving, data shows.

More than 3 million went through TSA checkpoints from Friday through Sunday, the agency’s data shows — with 1,047,934 on Sunday alone.

Health experts and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have repeatedly warned Americans to stay home for the holidays.

“The tragedy that could happen is that one of your family members, from coming together in this family gathering actually could end up being hospitalized and severely ill and die,” the CDC’s COVID-19 incident manager, Dr. Henry Walke, said.

On Sunday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio stressed at a church service that he was making this the first Thanksgiving that he would not see all his loved ones.

“I love them so much I want to make sure we will be together next year. That they’ll be on this earth next year… we will all stay alive together,” he said. “We have the power to protect each other.”
