UK man dies suddenly 7 years after winning lottery at age 16

A UK man who won more than $500,000 when he was just 16 — and spent part of his fortune visiting his favorite soccer team — has died suddenly at just 23.

Callum Fitzpatrick won the big haul in the National Lottery in 2014, becoming one of Northern Ireland’s youngest winners ever, the Mirror reported.

But the avid Manchester United fan tragically died last Tuesday, his local amateur team, Ballymartin GAC, announced. The cause of death was not disclosed.

A club spokesperson said the whole community has been left “deeply shocked and saddened” by Fitzpatrick’s tragic death.

“The Executive Committee, members, and the Ballymartin Senior men’s team are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic sudden passing of our friend and teammate Callum Fitzpatrick,” the team said in a statement.

“Callum will be sorely missed by everyone involved with Ballymartin GAC. A wonderful, intelligent young man, a great friend and teammate, tragically has left this life too soon,” the team added.

Fitzpatrick had been baby-sitting at his aunt’s house in Bryansford when he realized he had the winning numbers, according to the news outlet.

At the time, he was working at his parents’ grocery store.

The then-teen played the lottery to be able to visit Manchester United’s stadium, Old Trafford, and to buy a car.
