2 killed, including pregnant woman, when van flips in upstate NY

A pregnant woman was killed after a passenger van carrying her and 12 others flipped over in upstate New York while traveling to Niagara Falls from Pennsylvania.

The New York State Police confirmed two people died due to the accident in Wayland, about 100 miles west of the popular falls. A male was pronounced dead at the scene.

The remaining 11 were injured and taken to various hospitals. Two were airlifted.

None of the victim’s identities have been released.

The pregnant woman’s baby was safely delivered and is at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester for further evaluation, Trooper Commander Brian J. Ratajczak said at a press conference.

The accident occurred on Interstate 390 around 9:15 a.m. on Saturday after the van’s rear wheel malfunctioned, causing the driver to lose control and hit a median.

The 2005 Ford, which was transporting three Pennsylvania families, rolled several times before coming to a stop.

Photos of the nearly-two-decade-old van shows the two back doors folding into each other with several large dents dotting the passenger side. The windshield was shattered and the roof of the van had several dents.

Roads were temporarily closed but have since been reopened.

The investigation is ongoing.
